With all profits going to the fantastic charity, The London Black Women's Project, Off to Work team member and songwriter Brooke has recently released her first song 'Hidden'. It was released on International Women's Day as a way of commemorating the contribution women have made throughout history that is often not recognised. It also celebrates inspirational women from our everyday lives.

We caught up with Brooke as she filled us in on her artistic pursuits, inspirations, and how she maintains a work / life balance.

Do you have a stand out shift or moment whilst working for us?

I did the month in Turkmenistan with you guys! It was definitely the most challenging and exciting opportunity through OTW.

Do you have a ‘favourite’ client to work for?

"Lick Me I’m Delicious" are super cool! I love being a favourite for M&S. I recently worked with Finovate from Seattle which was awesome as I really felt part of the team.

Tell us about your song and the process behind it, what important message and story are you trying to convey?

The song was inspired by the film "Hidden Figures", based on a true story of three African American women in 1960’s. Despite facing significant racism and sexism, they managed to make a significant contribution to the NASA space programme and their work continues to make an impact today. 

Women are struggling all over the world for their right to have equal opportunities, and continue to make significant contributions to the world we live in today. I would like to use this song to say thank you and recognise women of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Tell us more about London Black Women’s Project and where proceeds are going - what impact do you hope your song will have?

All the profits of the song will be going to The London Black Women’s Project on Barking Street. Through visiting the charity, I got to learn about how much ground work they do to help women who have struggled. Their mission is to provide advice, guidance, support, advocacy and accommodation under a framework of empowerment and self-sustainability, by influencing and affecting change in government policy and, by providing a safe environment. LBWP has 7 refuges with 51 bedspaces spread across East and North London.

I hope this song will raise awareness and raise funds for LBWP.

How easy is it to balance working alongside pursuing your artistic projects?

It’s pretty easy. OTW are really cool for working around my studio sessions, and helping me get booked onto work when I really need it! I like the work/creative balance, it makes you appreciate the time you have doing ‘your own thing’ and I love seeing my friends and meeting new people at every OTW job.
