# 3 things to do in a recession - by hospitality experts who thrived

## ***1) Keep hold of your staff - you'll need them when it's all over!***

He says "keep calm, have self-belief, cut your costs as much as you can.. but be loyal to your staff. You need good, proper staff for when the taps come back on... otherwise you're screwed!" ### ***2) Double down with what you're good at - don't muddy the waters!***
We caught up with Urban Caprice Managing Director [Lucy Verner](https://blog.offtowork.co.uk/one-amazing-experience-with-lucy-verner) on how she is planning to tackle a global downturn and she gave some poignant advice - strengthen your brand and define what you're good at! She said "I think it's important to not try and reinvent the wheel and be something you're not. The most important thing is to stick to what you do and what you know." ### *3) Look for collaborative opportunities*
It can be scary, and tricky, but being open to collaborations with other businesses can be an excellent way to keep costs down and increase profits. After starting her boutique catering firm Top Hat in 2002, [**Hattie Mauleverer**](https://blog.offtowork.co.uk/one-amazing-experience-with-hattie-top-hat-catering) recommends reaching out with similar companies to share overheads - "it's so silly" to not consider it!
